Annabella flower girl on the beach...
Annabella flower girl on the beach…

Anna came along on a mid summers  day when the largest Moonflower I have ever seen  bloomed.

Moonflowers are so special because each flower lasts only  a few hours and this one was the size of a Frisbee.
I knew from that moment that she was someone special.
To survive being  Marta’s little sister was going to take some quiet determination. Anna possesses quiet determination. She, unlike her sister is thoughtful, by that I mean she is a thinker…she is patient to Marta’s impatient. I bet she will be willing to sit back with a plan… as to Marta’s jumping in with unbridled enthusiasm
Marta started talking much sooner then Anna because Marta had lots of wants and needs and she knew that in order to get them met she needed to talk …and talk fast.  Marta called me Mimi at 10 months.
Last  summer Anna had a vocabulary of about  three  words, Emme (Epp)  Ma-mam (food) Addin (Justin).
She was able to get all of her needs met with these three words.
Still,  as her Mimi I wanted her to say my name .  Anna loves to eat and each time I fed her I would use my name Anna do you want Mimi to make you cheese eggies (scrambled eggs with cheddar cheese)?  Do you want spaghetti Anna?  Mimi will make you pasta. (I know I am so Italian).  She would always look at me as if to say sure you can do all of this for me, but she would never say my name.  Ugh! it was so frustrating.
On the the way to the airport I tried to give her one last opportunity.
I was bold ..ah common  Anna please say Mimi for me befoe you go. She just looked at me as if to say begging won’t work, when I get to it I will say it ..but it ain’t happening today…
It was beginning to make me crazy ..she loves me,  she hugs me , kisses me  but she won’t say my name !
The other day Justin called he said “Anna say Mimi” and she said Mimi and then she said Popa .
He said that he said to her Anna lets call Popa and her response was to say  Mimi….and then he said Mimi and she said Popa.
For some reason when I saw her on SKYPE the other day she had this look of  understanding ..she knew us smiled was very interested and tried  to kiss the screen and I guess chose, because it was her need, her time,  to say Mimi…it was like  okay you have waited long enough and I’m all good with this Mimi & Popa thing now so ..hey.. “Hi Mimi & Popa”.
Our 30th Wedding Anniversary is the 16thof this month and she gave us a gift well worth waiting for….
Thank you baby Annabella… what a nice  present.
Love,  Your Mimi!!

She’s a girl

A few weeks ago Marta called and left a message to “call me Mimi as soon as you get home”.  I love hearing her voice on my answering machine and I keep her messages to hear her voice when…I just need to hear her voice.

When I called she answered Tere  and I said “hi Marta it’s your Mimi’ and she started talking about the snow and that they had made a snow man and many other little girl chit chat things. After awhile I asked to speak to her father, who she calls Justin most of the time.  I have a difficult time hearing her call him that for some reason.  Perhaps because  it’s just not done here.  I said to Marta  “will you tell your Daddy that I want to speak to him”?  She said okay I will go get him, and then I said put the phone down,  but don’t hang it up,  she said  “okay Mimi”I will” .  I repeated it again…“now don’t hang the phone up”she said okay again.   The phone cluncked as she droped it and off she went to get her father.  She was back in a second and picked up the phone and said

…”Ya know Mimi I’m a girl,  and girls we can do two things”.

I said yes you are and I know that you can and I was laughing so hard.

There was a moment last summer when we were getting ready for a summer pool party here.  There was much to be done and neither Justin or his father can multi task very well.  In a moment of frustration I said  to her “your Papa and your father cannot do more than one thing at a time…..you are lucky you are a girl Marta,  girls can do more than one thing at a time.

She remembered that moment because she’s a girl….. and a very smart one too!
